About James

You are here because you may have found yourself in an overwhelming situation haunted by unresolved issues from your past. Maybe, you are in a toxic relationship that leaves you drained and unsure of yourself. Or perhaps, you’re experiencing a heaviness that makes everyday life feel muted or difficult to move through.

As someone who has lived through significant social change within the LGBTQ+ community — including times when being gay meant risking family rejection, job loss, and social isolation — I understand the impact of stigma as well as the importance of safety and belonging. I lived through the early years of the AIDS epidemic, experienced the loss of friends during that time, and witnessed the long, meaningful path toward legal recognition of same-sex relationships and marriage. As part of a same-sex couple who built a life and raised a child together, I also understand the everyday realities, resilience, and deep rewards of creating family and connection outside traditional expectations.

These experiences are the reason why I strive to offer my clients a space where we slow things down enough to understand what is happening beneath the surface. I firmly believe therapy should help you function as your best self, find resilience through personal strengths, become more aware of your community, and draw strength from your environment.

I have many years of psychotherapy experience helping clients overcome issues related to depression, anxiety and relationship problems. I have also assisted people working through grief, addiction, and self-esteem issues through individual, couple, and family therapy.

My approach is grounded in the understanding that people are shaped by their life experiences, relationships, and the environments they move through. My lived experience deeply informs my work and my commitment to creating a genuinely affirming therapeutic space. As someone who grew up in a small rural town, I understand the feeling of reinventing one’s self and adapting to very different social and urban environments. I have also experienced the realities of caring for aging parents through illness and loss, and the emotional process of coming to terms with their decline and passing while holding on to a sense of meaning in those relationships.

In my couple and family therapy work, I tailor therapy to each person’s needs and goals by using Client-Centred, Solution-Focused, and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) modalities. My work with couples and families draws on my knowledge of family dynamics, including the work of Salvador Minuchin and Virginia Satir, as well as training at the George Hull Centre for Children and Families. I also bring extensive experience from a hospital-based outpatient mental health program supporting people through trauma, anxiety, depression, grief, addictions, and relationship challenges.

It has been life changing to see the passing of laws that protected us from workplace discrimination and allowed for same-sex marriage. These experiences have shaped not only my life, but also how I understand resilience, identity, and the importance of being fully seen. That’s what I want to bring into the therapy room with you: A space where your story is met with respect, where your  lived experiences are understood in context, and where we can work together toward a life that feels more grounded, connected, and authentically your own.

Cancellation Policy

When you book a session, your clinician reserves their time for you. In the event that you will be unable to keep an appointment, please notify your clinician at least 24 hours in advance, so that someone else may utilize the time. Similarly, when your clinician is unable to keep the appointment with you, they will give you more than a 24-hour notice and rebook to another date and time.

In the case whereby you are unable to provide 24-hour cancellation notice (e.g., you cancel an appointment on the day of the appointment [i.e., the same day] or do not show up for a scheduled appointment), unless for emergency reasons (e.g., medical or family emergencies), you will be charged the fee for your session and payment will be required at your next scheduled session.

Note: Employee Assistance Programs and other insurance-based programs will not reimburse you, the client, for missed appointment costs.
