What is a Secondary Assessment for TRS?

A Secondary Assessment is often requested as part of the surgical readiness process for gender-affirming procedures. While many surgeries only require one letter of support, some healthcare systems or surgeons may require a second opinion from another qualified mental health provider.

Who is This Service For?

You may need a secondary assessment if:

You want a validating and thorough second opinion as part of your personal care journey

You're working with a public health system that requires two assessments for certain procedures

Your primary mental health provider already provided a letter, but a second opinion is requested

Your surgical provider or insurance plan requires an additional letter of support

What Does the Assessment Involve?

All assessments are conducted by qualified mental health professionals (registered psychotherapists, social workers, or psychologists) with lived or clinical experience supporting the 2SLGBTQIA+ community.

  • A gender-affirming clinical interview (either virtual or in-person)

  • A written assessment letter for your insurer, provider, or surgeon

  • Exploration of gender identity and surgical goals

  • Informed consent and expectations around the surgery

  • Review of relevant medical, mental health, and social history
